Bible Reading for December: The Promise of Restoration

Isaiah 9:2-7 (NIV)

This passage, often read during the Christmas season, speaks of the light coming into darkness and foretells the birth of the Messiah. It provides a strong basis for discussing hope and the transformation that comes with divine intervention.

Verse Text Key Theme for Discussion

2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Hope in Darkness: Discuss starting a new month with a focus on hope, even amidst personal or global challenges.

3 You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder. Joy and Celebration: Reflect on the sources of true joy and how gratitude enlarges our perspective.

4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. Freedom and Liberation: Discuss breaking free from burdens (stress, worry) through faith and relying on God's strength.

5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. Peace and Transformation: The promise of lasting peace, signifying an end to conflict and strife.

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The Names of Christ: Focus on the significance of the four titles and what they mean for our daily lives and decision-making.

7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. Eternity and Justice: A powerful reminder of God’s ultimate authority and the certainty of His plan for the future.

Suggested Discussion Focus

This reading is excellent for discussing how the promises of God—delivered through the "Wonderful Counselor" and "Prince of Peace"—can provide guidance and stability as we reflect on the past year and prepare for the new one.
